19 ninth grade students at the Expeditionary Learning High School in Portland spent several weeks shadowing executives and employees of the Portland Pirates' Hockey Team to better understand the role of business in the community. We'll talk to several students, Leslie Appelbaum their teacher, and Greg Glynn, the Director of Communications for the Portland Pirates, to learn about this hands-on method of learning. The Expeditionary Learning High School's design as a K-12 model for comprehensive school reform will be of great interest to our listeners. "This is a better method of learning," the students told me when I met with them earlier in the week. The emphasis is on high achievement through active learning, character growth, and team work. As the students learn about various topics, all of their teachers relate class work to the project. "This way, we are not just learning 'Math' in a vacuum, but we see how math is used in an every day, real-world way." The students, all freshmen, impressed me so much I decided to devote the entire show to them and this project which will culminate on January 27th when the students will actually run the Pirates' game against the Springfield Falcons. The students worked in teams with the Pirates' front office staff to sell and plan their game on January 27th. They worked with members of the Pirates' staff to create a business strategy, a financial strategy, a production plan, and a marketing plan with each area being overseen by a member of the Pirates' front office staff. Next week, we'll learn more about this innovative reform initiative from Superintendent Mary Jo O'Connor, Derek Pierce, Principal of the new school, and Mike McCarthy, Principal of the King Middle School, where expeditionary learning has turned his school around.
