My life-long friend and acclaimed, award-winning psychologist Dr. David Walsh will explain exactly what happens to the human brain on the path from childhood into adolescence and adulthood. Revealing the latest scientific findings in easy-to-understand terms, and with humor, Dr. Dave will show why moodiness, quickness to anger and to take risks, miscommunication, fatigue, territoriality, and other familiar teenage behavior problems are so common - all are linked to physical changes and growth in the adolescent brain. Why Do They Act That Way? is the first book to explain the changes in teens' brains and show parents, teachers, and coaches how to use this information to understand, communicate with, and stay connected to their kids. In the first of several shows, Dr. Dave will make sense of teenagers' many mystifying, annoying, and even outright dangerous behavioral difficulties. In subsequent shows, Dr. Dave will provide solutions for dealing with everyday as well as severe challenges. You will feel as if you are having coffee with someone who is not only entertaining and enlightening, but who knows exactly how if feels to be the mom or dad of a 21st Century teen. Why Do They Act That Way provides a Parental Survival Kit that provides practical advice for dealing with issues like curfews, disrespectful language and actions, and bullying. Dr. Dave and his wife Monica are the parents of three adult children. They live in Minneapolis, MN. Dave has been a high school teacher and coach, and as a clinical psychologist has counseled thousands of teens and their parents. He is the director of counseling programs for youth and families at Fairview Health Services in Minneapolis, and the founder and president of the internationally renowned National Institute on Media and Family. He is also on the faculty of the Family Education Department at the University of Minnesota. Dave is a highly sought-after speaker who has presented to parents, educators, and other professionals. A consultant to the World Health Organization and the Ministry of Education of Japan, he has testified before congressional committees on numerous occasions. He has written seven previous books, including the award-winning Selling Out of America's Children. He is a frequent guest on national radio and television, and has appeared on The Today Show, Good Morning America, The Early Show, The News Hour with Jim Lehrer, Dateline, 20//20, and NPR's All Things Considered.
