Headlines From The Nation's Press Each week we open the show with some of the most glaring and reoccurring stories chronicling the ugliness surrounding youth sports organized by adults. These headlines clap like thunder across the country signaling a warning to parents, coaches, administrators, and spectators that violence, cheating, and abuse can happen anywhere at any time. My good friend, and frequent guest on the show, Professor Doug Abrams of the College of Law at the University of Missouri, will add you to his daily mailing list of these stories. Simply email Doug and ask him to add your name to the list. The Main(e) Event
My guests will be Kerry Kertes high school and Masters swim coach; Niki Voyer former college athlete, and Fitness Specialist at the University of New England; Bre Fortiguerra, former college hockey player, and Scarborough High's women's hockey coach; Lars Jorgensen, former college athlete and women's swim coach at the University of Toledo; and Ashley Tremblay, sophomore on a swimming scholarship at the University of Toledo. We'll be talking about college scholarships as one goal of participation in sports; how recruiting works; and the demands on scholarship student athletes. We'll also explore the pros and cons of sports in terms of preparing young people for a lifetime of exercise and physical activity. Kerry Kertes and Niki Voyer will help us discover the importance of lifetime participation through exercise and wellness programs. The Coaches Corner With Little League Baseball just around the corner, I'll be giving tips for coaches on age-appropriate skills and coaching techniques, as well as how to formulate your own personal coaching philosophy. Regis' Rant More on Barry Bonds, this time focusing on cheating in sports, and protecting the integrity of sports. I'll also reflect on the World Baseball Classic, and international competitions in basketball and hockey. The Parent Trap With Little League Baseball just around the corner, I'll be giving tips for parents on how to avoid the "Baseball\Soccer\Hockey is Life" syndrome that can distort your perspective, destroy balance, and cast your family life into chaos.
