Headlines From The Nation's Press

Each week we open the show with some of the most glaring and reoccurring stories chronicling the ugliness surrounding youth sports organized by adults; issues pertaining to our children's health and education. These headlines clap like thunder across the country signaling a warning to parents, coaches, administrators, lawmakers, and community stakeholders that widespread change is imperative.

My good friend, and frequent guest on the show, Professor Doug Abrams of the College of Law at the University of Missouri, will add you to his daily mailing list of these stories. Simply email Doug and ask him to add your name to the list.

The Main(e) Event

My guests will be Dr. Doug Brown, one of the original founders of Orthopaedic Associates of Portland, a leader in sports medicine; Kerry Kertes, high school teacher, coach, and father of three competitive athletes; and Lisa Bingham, mother, and recreation programmer, City of S. Portland. Doug,Kerry, and Lisa have become regulars on the show because of their wisdom, knowledge, and understanding of the role of sport in our culture.

We'll be talking about parenting children in sports, starting with young children right through high school. Former guests, from athletic directors, coaches, to game officials all agree that the behavior and involvement of parents has changed the most in the past 20 years. Some of it has been good, but some of it has been quite harmful.

We'll be discussing what the timeless value of sport is all about, how parents can avoid getting "trapped" before they realize how sports have destroyed the balance in family life, put undue pressure and stress on their children, and cost them untold thousands of dollars, many of us wish we had saved for college!

The Coaches Corner

The same things that make for a "good sports parent," also apply to the coach who can make it or break it for the whole family, especially, if "dad" is the coach.

Regis' Rant

Depends on my mood! There's lots to rant about parents' involvement in the games their children play. Just might rant on "giving the games back to the kids."

The Parent Trap

Understanding the "Parent Trap" is what this whole show is about.
