Headlines From The Nation's Press Each week we open the show with some of the most glaring and reoccurring stories chronicling the ugliness surrounding youth sports organized by adults; issues pertaining to our children's health and education. These headlines clap like thunder across the country signaling a warning to parents, coaches, administrators, lawmakers, and community stakeholders that widespread change is imperative. My good friend, and frequent guest on the show, Professor Doug Abrams of the College of Law at the University of Missouri, will add you to his daily mailing list of these stories. Simply email Doug and ask him to add your name to the list. The Main(e) Event
My guest this week will be Danny Bernstein, of White Plains, NY. Danny founded Backyard Sports because he believed that organized youth sports were not serving the needs of children. Since his own children have come of age, he has immersed himself in community sports. Danny believes that organized youth sports has fallen short of its main objective of teaching kids the socialization skills that sports offer. He wanted to start a program that teaches solid fundamentals in a supportive and challenging environment that will simultaneously teach "love of the game." Not some disgruntled parent wanting to live a failed athletic career through his children, Danny excelled in baseball, basketball, and tennis at the youth levels, and focused on soccer in high school, and was the captain of the Amherst soccer team in his senior year. Backyard Sports focuses on the "joy of athletics" and the powerful messages that sports can teach our kids. Danny employs coaches who are professional educators because of their ability to teach and inspire kids. Backyard Sports makes sure kids get to play with their friends free from the distractions and pressures of today's youth sports experience. I'm excited to share Danny's bold and courageous goal of making a difference in the lives of our children and doing his part to keep kids playing for life. The Coaches Corner I'll have some helpful hints for first-time and veteran coaches about what is really important. Regis' Rant Depends on my mood! There's lots to rant about parents' involvement in the games their children play. Just might rant on "giving the games back to the kids." The Parent Trap More on the "Parent Trap" of youth sports and how to be aware of it and how to protect yourself from becoming ensnared.
