Headlines From The Nation's Press Each week we open the show with some of the most glaring and reoccurring stories chronicling the ugliness surrounding youth sports organized by adults; issues pertaining to our children's health and education. These headlines clap like thunder across the country signaling a warning to parents, coaches, administrators, lawmakers, and community stakeholders that widespread change is imperative. My good friend, and frequent guest on the show, Professor Doug Abrams of the College of Law at the University of Missouri, will add you to his daily mailing list of these stories. Simply email Doug and ask him to add your name to the list. The Main(e) Event
For the past three weeks, controversy has swirled around the country over the Connecticut High School Association's new rule that would suspend a coach for one game for running up a score of 50 or more points against an opponent. For three consecutive weeks, newspapers from every state, ESPN, and even Sports Illustrated continue to weigh in on the subject. Not surprising that everybody has an opinion, and that there are strong positions on both sides. My new student intern, DJ Abisalih, produced this week's show. His invited guests are Don Wilson, Athletic Director at Biddeford High and a member of the football committee of the Maine Principals Association; Eric Klein, Scarborough High football coach; Kevin Woodhouse, S. Portland High AD; and we hope a couple of players who were on the wrong side of some of those scores here in the Portland area. We are going to open the phones to get the opinions of our callers, who we are sure are as much divided over this issue as the rest of the country. Do you think it is a matter of poor sportsmanship to run up the score, or do you think that it is just part of the game that happens. Many folks think that a coach who runs up the score is teaching the wrong message to his/her players. Others ask, "am I supposed to tell my kids to lay down and not try?" The Coaches Corner I'll have some helpful hints for first-time and veteran coaches about what is really important. Regis' Rant For millions of kids world-wide, the Little League season is over. Why is it that all of those sandlots and perfectly manicured fields are now empty of kids when summer vacation is just around the corner? I'll be "going off" on ESPN and the Little League World Series that focuses on a few hundred "all-stars," and our need to crown a "world" champion for 12 and 13 year olds. The Parent Trap More on the "Parent Trap" of youth sports and how to be aware of it and how to protect yourself from becoming ensnared.
