Headlines From The Nation's Press Each week we open the show with some of the most glaring and reoccurring stories chronicling the ugliness surrounding youth sports organized by adults; issues pertaining to our children's health and education. These headlines clap like thunder across the country signaling a warning to parents, coaches, administrators, lawmakers, and community stakeholders that widespread change is imperative. My good friend, and frequent guest on the show, Professor Doug Abrams of the College of Law at the University of Missouri, will add you to his daily mailing list of these stories. Simply email Doug and ask him to add your name to the list. The Main(e) Event
Mark Kostin and David Ruff from the Great Maine Schools Project/Southern Maine Partnership return to talk about "summer." as a key component of quality learning for all students. We'll talk about how summers are different now for students and teachers; what teachers do; what students do, and why times are changing. This will be an another engaging, interesting and fun discussion with two of our favorite professors. An Inconvenient Truth - The Movie Six years ago, I founded The Center For Kids FIRST in Sports, Health, and Education because I believed that change was needed in how adults conduct youth sports, how our schools approached learning, and how the healthcare system and our entire society were contributing to a wellness crisis in raising our children. Lasting and meaningful change will only occur when the adults who run programs for kids, schools, and healthcare begin to look at the needs of our children FIRST and not their own needs and egos, and when they stop tinkering with the status quo. Thursday, I stumbled onto a quaint little movie theater on Exchange Street in Portland that was showing the most important film of our time! This film probably won't be showing in the big theaters any time soon, and it won't win an Oscar. Nevertheless, you must see this film, take your children, your students, your young athletes, and tell everyone you know to see this film. An Inconvenient Truth, directed by Davis Guggenheim, and narrated by Al Gore, presents the undisputed facts and practical solutions to reverse the effects of climate change. Critics, are acclaiming this as a "phenomenal program," "the most terrifying movie ever made," and "a must see-and-tell-everyone-you-know-movie." Visit the website: www.an-inconvenient-truth.com (or Google) for more about this epic documentary. I'll be discussing the film in the first segment of the show, and will be promoting it all summer because this movie is about the most basic need of our children and grandchildren: survival on this planet we call home! The Coaches Corner I'll have some helpful hints for first-time and veteran coaches about what is really important. Regis' Rant For millions of kids world-wide, the Little League season is over. Why is it that all of those sandlots and perfectly manicured fields are now empty of kids when summer vacation is just around the corner? I'll be "going off" on ESPN and the Little League World Series that focuses on a few hundred "all-stars," and our need to crown a "world" champion for 12 and 13 year olds. The Parent Trap More on the "Parent Trap" of youth sports and how to be aware of it and how to protect yourself from becoming ensnared.
