The major work of The Center For Kids First in Sports, Health, and Education is to prevent and treat childhood obesity through our School-based Model. 75% of all children involved in organized youth sports either quit or a cut before the age of 14. Combined with the fact that vigorous physical activity through meaningful PE classes  has been eliminated from public school curriculums, 75% - 80% of all of our children have been forced into inactivity.

Incredibly, to make more time for instructional learning, 40% of the public schools across the country have either reduced or eliminated recess. To make matters worse, the No Child Left Behind Legislation, together with an emphasis on standardized testing, has forced everything but the “basics” from the curriculum. Not only have electives such as Music, Art, Drama, and Journalism disappeared, but Nutrition, Health, and Substance Avoidance as well.

It is incredible, but true. In light of a national health crisis of pandemic proportions, our attention has been focused away from the “real basics” of survival: healthy lifestyle habits.

Joining me for a discussion on this topic will be the First Lady of the State of Maine , Mrs. Karen Baldacci, a teacher and registered dietician; Dr. Dora Mills, the Chief State Health Officer and Director of the Maine Bureau of Health; and Dr. Lisa Letourneau, the Director of Clinical Integration for Maine Health.

Here are some of the topics we will begin to discuss on Saturday, the first in a series of shows on childhood obesity.
