Ed Arnold is managing editor of the Peterborough Examiner in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada and the author of "Whose Puck Is It Anyway?" We'll talk about his attempt to "give the game back to the kids" by teaching them the fundamentals, but making sure every one of his kids had fun. Two former NHL players, Steve Larmer, and Greg Millen, assisted him with the Minor Novice Peterborough Petes. Arnold has challenged the Canadian Hockey Association to adopt a Fair Play Philosophy at all levels. He doesn't believe that the mission of youth hockey is to produce professional players, but to make sure all kids can learn to play and enjoy the game. The kids would play all positions. There would be no yelling at players, coaches, or referees. The kids would not be forced to follow a systems approach to hockey, but would be left to figure out what to do on the ice for themselves. Everyone would have equal ice time - even in playoffs and in the final minutes of important games. We will also talk about why it is so difficult to find and keep good coaches; the pressure to win; the scholarship obsession; sportsmanship; district transfer rules, and more. This show is sure to create differing opinions. We hope to hear from our listeners. I highly recommend parents and coaches read Ed Arnold's terrific story about a season to remember. It can be purchased on Amazon.com.
