In an entire show dedicated to our "Listen, The Children Are Talking" feature, we will hear what our children think about many of the issues impacting and influencing their lives. All we ever hear are the so-called adult "experts" telling us what is happening to our children. Juventus/The Center For Kids FIRST In Sports, Health, and Education believes that we should be listening to what our children are saying so that we can place their needs FIRST! Our children are telling is that they don't like youth sports organized by adults: 75% quit before they reach high school. Our children are telling us in survey after survey the quit because it stops being fun, there is too much emphasis on winning, and they want to be with the real friends who are not necessarily teammates. Our children are telling us they are under great pressure from parents, school, and sports. The number of children being treated for a variety of psychological stress disorders is growing and kept quiet, and teen-age suicide is a serious and growing concern. Our children are telling us that after four years of high school and four years of college they can't find jobs in their chosen fields. Millions are returning home as adults to live with their parents. Is it really necessary that our children will require advanced degrees to find jobs, further prolonging "childhood" and delaying their entry into adult society even longer? The majority of jobs in America are created in small service businesses or the trades. Does every American child really need four years of college to find honorable work and fulfillment in life? Unfortunately in our society, we treat children as if they are void of ideas and creativity; most of our adult world is conditioned to believe that our children have little to offer because they lack "enough knowledge and experience." Our attitudes often indicate a basic lack of respect for children, and therefore, we don't listen to them. In school they are expected to learn what the adult world believes they must learn. At home, they are expected to follow the rules of their parents. In society, they are also expected to follow adult rules and conventions. They are barred from meaningful jobs that could lead to happy and fulfilling careers, and instead are relegated to working part-time in retail or fast-food establishments. The Center For Kids FIRST believes that our children are full of wisdom, creativity, and enthusiasm. They are concerned and informed about the major social and political issues of their time....They want to get involved. They have much to offer. But nobody is listening or willing to let them help us find solutions. On Saturday's show, we will hear what six high school seniors think about the risks to their health that take the form of drugs, alcohol, tobacco, poor eating habits and a lack of sufficient daily exercise. We will hear what they think about the hyper-competitive nature of organized youth sports; over-involved parents; and the pressure to excel and win athletic scholarships. This
will be an exceptional and memorable show, and one that you will not want to
miss.
