My guests will be my friend, Dr. Doug Brown, one of the founding partners of Orthopaedic Associates of Portland. Dr. Doug has been a frequent guest and co-host of the show; Scarborough High Athletic Director, and President of the MGIHA; Bre Fortiguerra, Scarborough High Women's Hockey Coach; Peter Landis, parent representative from Cape Elizabeth to the MGIHA, and several women hockey players. We will examine the phenomenal growth of women's sports in general, and in particular, ice hockey. Dr. Brown believes that the U.S. Women's Soccer Team, led by Mia Hamm, put women's sports on the map when the played before 70,000 fans in winning the Olympic Gold Medal. Frank Spencer and Peter Landis will discuss the state of interscholastic women's hockey in Maine. We will want to know what the Maine Principals' Association, (MPA) the governing body of interscholastic sports, requires for a sport to be sanctioned. Is funding the main issue? What is the process individual schools must pursue in order to sanction a new sport? We'll discuss the pros and cons of club sports vs interscholastic sports sponsored by schools. If winning has become the goal, how can schools justify including sports in the education mix. On the other hand, if the purpose of interscholastic sports is to compliment classroom learning and to promote lifetime participation in sport, should not every student who wants to play be able to actively participate. Otherwise, how can one justify the enormous amounts of money, time, and effort that are required to sponsor high school sports. We'll hear from several young women who have been playing hockey since they were very young. They want to represent their schools, play before crowds of friends and parents, and have their own state championship. The girls will tell us why they love ice hockey, how they feel about playing against boys, and what their futures in the sport may hold. This is another show in our series of examining not only sports, but the role of sports in schools, and in the development of healthy lifestyles for all students.
